PAYDAY SUPER
From 1 July 2026 employers will be required to make Superannuation Guarantee (SG) contributions on pay day. Effectively on the day you pay your employees you must also make applicable superannuation payments to your employees superannuation fund.
There will be a 7 day “due date” for contributions to be received by the employees superannuation fund. This includes the time it will take for the contributions to move through the clearing houses to their actual funds.
The exceptions will be:
- Contributions paid within the first 2 weeks of employment for a new employee
- Small and irregular payments that occur outside the employees ordinary pay cycle
The Bad News
Where an employer fails to pay contributions in full and on time, the employer will be liable for SG charge. All assessments of the updated SG charge will be made by the ATO. Assessments would be triggered where there is non-payment detected by the ATO, which could occur by voluntary disclosure of an employer, an employee notification or the ATO’s proactive compliance. Additional interest and penalties apply if the assessed SG charge is not paid by the due date.
